Replacing the hard drive in my MacBook Pro
My late 2011 MacBook Pro, model 8,2 running OS 10.12.5, has become unreliable, and will almost always crash when I attempt to use it.
It has passed the built-in extended hardware test, so I assume that the computer is mechanically OK, and that my difficulties are software-related.
I've decided to replace its hard drive, so my questions have to do with installing software onto the new drive.
I've re-installed OS 10.12.5 several times via MacOS Recovery and Disk Repair with no lasting relief, so I'm pretty sure that the crashing is a result of incompatibilities between Apple software and third-party software, and my fear is that I may end up with a corrupted hard drive again if I simply clone the old hard drive or use Migration Assistant.
So, I'm asking folks here if there's any strategy I need to employ while installing applcations and data onto the new hard drive to get a reliable installation.
Thanks, Larry

Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Etrecheck – System Information
It's pretty simple to isolate the problem from software and a possibly failed hard disk drive. I know of no software utilities that can be reliably used to conclusively implicate a failed hard disk drive, including Apple's Disk Utility and third party "SMART Utilities". The best they can do is to positively identify a failure. In other words a declaration of health is inconclusive.
Follow these instructions for now. If they are inconclusive you can install Sierra on an external hard disk drive according to How to set up and use an external Mac startup disk - Apple Support. Install your essential software and files on it. If it works well while the internal one does not, replacing the internal hard disk drive is justified.
Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. The reason for creating a backup is that the symptoms you describe could be indicative of an impending hard disk drive failure, so securing your data is a primary concern.
Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been, and describe your observations in a reply to this Discussion.
Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.
Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.
Let me know what you determine.
