AirPods on MacOS High Sierra

Since upgrading to High Sierra on PowerBook 2015, AirPods have had intermittent issues of losing the auto-off on removal of earpiece functionality. During these times, the <double tap-to-function> doesn't function either. The audio itself seems unaffected. If BOTH earpieces are removed and put on horizontal surface, the audio output automatically switches from AirPod to PowerBook audio.

Please advise.
