I have a Seagate Backup Plus portable drive whi...

My Seagate drive was working fine but suddenly ceased to be recognised. Is there a fault with these drives or with the Mac? Is there a fix or a way of recovering the backups?

I have several of these and have so far had no problems with them. However answers to the following may help narrow down the issue.

  1. Can you confirm you are connecting this via USB?
  2. If so go to the Apple Menu, select About this Mac, then click on System Report. This will open the System Information app. Now click on USB on the left.
  3. Does it list a device that seems appropriate to being the Seagate?
  4. If so run Disk Utility does it list any drives again likely matching the Seagate?
  5. If it does what format does it say it is?

When I get these I immediately erase them as Mac HFS+ format, I believe they come in a different format.

Since this is a traditional hard drive it is possible that it has failed completely, if so it will not show up under USB or Disk Utility.

If you have not done so yet it is worth trying on a different USB port and also a different Mac. Sometime a USB port can get confused although a reboot usually clears that.
