how to find the number of emails in account

I am using Mail, and I see a number like (54). I imagine that is the # of unread emails.

Is there a way to see the total number of emails in my account?

Mail.app's main window title will tell you the total number of messages in any given mailbox (e.g.: 'Inbox (12,345 messages, 123 unread').

However, this does not extend to the entire account, only the mailbox/folder you're looking at. Other mailboxes (including Junk, Trash, Sent, and any other other custom mailboxes you have configured) would not be included. You'd need to walk through these mailboxes and add their counts to get a total for the entire account.
