iCloud in El Capitan
Hi All!
The word „still“ in the title refers to the following thread:
I’d like to use this opportunity to sincerely thank Eric Root for his kind help yet again. His advice DID allow me to get rid of my problem and - overjoyed - I at once marked it as „Solved“.
Very unfortunately, my joy was only short-lived… After about 24 hours iCloud started asking for my Apple ID all over again (s. my last posting on page 2 of the a. m. thread).
And since one cannot undo the „Solved“ mark on the old thread, I have to start a new one - which is where we are now.
Here is a short rundown:
1) The problem - since about a year iCloud keeps asking for my Apple ID at about 9 out of 10 start-ups (iMac 21,5“, Intel Core i5, Mid. 2011 with El Capitan);
2) Logging in and out of iCloud did not help;
3) LittleSnitch proved innocent - disabling/enabling it didn’t help;
4) Removing outdated Safari plug-ins didn’t help either;
5) What helped (thanks to Eric Root) - albeit for only as long as one day - was trashing the following items:
~/Library/Caches folder
~/Library/Application Support/iCloud folder
~/Library/Preferences/MobileMeAccounts.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Upon trashing the above files and folders iCloud kept silent for about 24 hours after which, to my dismay, it started asking for my Apple ID all over again (and this is alas still the case at the time of writing).
If it’s of any use, below is the latest EtreCheck report.
All and any help will be greatly appreciated! (Eric, are you listening?)

As I answered on the original post, I missed the update until today. Same suggestion as I posted on the other post.
Try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted.
This is what I replied to you in the original thread:
------------------- quote ---------------
Thank you for your reply, Eric!
I have, as far as I can see it in „About this Mac“, the latest version of Mac OS and I HAVE installed this Combo Update back in July.
Also, clicking on „Updates“ in App Store does not show that it is available for me. Unless, of course, you mean that I can and/should do it manually nonetheless from the link you have provided.
I doubt though it would help… I had this problem with iCloud before and after this Combo Update in July - no difference at all.
That said, do you mean I should sort of „overwrite“ my system with this Combo Update all the same?
------------------- unquote ------------
So, should I run the Combo Update all the same?
Thank you!
That is the only thing I can think of to try. It may not help.
I started having the problem of iCloud persistently asking for my Apple ID about a year ago and it did not go away after I installed the latest Combo Update this July.
Do you mean to say that I should install it nonetheless AGAIN, overwriting its own version of July which I have on my system? Please look at the EtreCheck report above - it says:
System Software: ⓘ
OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 (15G1611)
You recommend to install it yet again all the same? Yes? No?
If it didn't fix the problem last time, I doubt it will now. I'll see if I can think of something else to suggest.
On my older iMac (iMac 21,5“, Intel Core i5, Mid. 2011 with El Capitan) - the one whose iCloud would not stop asking for my Apple ID after EVERY boot-up (i. e., now more often than ever before), there is also the problem of Keychain which insists on staying switched on (see also here - ).
Today, hoping to kill two birds with one stone, I did the following and obtained these results:
1) Booted in Safe Mode;
(I for one do not know how to interpret it, but it probably might have some diagnostic value for you, Eric: even after booting in Safe Mode iCloud IMMEDIATELY asked me for my Apple ID!!!)
2) Disabled Keychain —> it re-enabled itself back again at once;
3) I then trashed these things:
~/Library/Caches folder
~/Library/Application Support/iCloud folder
~/Library/Preferences/MobileMeAccounts.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
4) Re-booted in Recovery Mode and ran Disk First Aid;
5) Re-booted normally —> iCloud immediately asked me again for my Apple ID;
6) Turned the computer off and booted up again in Safe Mode —> here too iCloud immediately asked me for my Apple ID;
7) Instead of typing in my Apple ID and allowing iCloud to connect to Apple servers, I clicked on „Later“;
8) Logged out of iCloud completely;
9) Trashed these same things one more time:
~/Library/Caches folder
~/Library/Application Support/iCloud folder
~/Library/Preferences/MobileMeAccounts.plist
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
10) Rebooted normally;
11) Logged back into iCloud and answered all questions regarding Keychain with „No“ (no code, please; yes, I want to delete it from my computer; no, I do not want to use it with safari… and such like);
12) At last the Keychain check-box stayed blank ….. but only for a few minutes. After a short while it switched itself back on again without even asking me;
12a) Using the favor of the moment (Keychain check-box being blank on iMac), I un-checked it on my iPad 2 also - only to see it switching itself on back again at once.
13) Now… Keeping all my fingers crossed and knocking on wood, after each one of four consecutive start-ups iCloud has been keeping quiet and has so far not asked me for the Apple ID. Frankly, I am even afraid to speak of success - last week, after similar repairs it behaved one whole day long and then it started asking for the Apple ID all over again.
I’ll keep an eye on it for another day or two and if it stays the way it is today, I will mark this thread as „Solved“. Otherwise I will report here back again.
Thank you!
