Macbook Pro 2016 screen quality

I have recently purchased the 15 inch MBP with touch function. I still have my 2012 MBP Retina and I can see a big difference in the screen quality. The screen on the new MBP looks like it is best viewed straight on and at angles begins to get colour distortion (like a TN screen) - something that the older retina MBPs do not suffer from. I am very surprised and as a designer who needs a good screen at all angles, this is very disappointing.

Did Apple change the type of screen? Or is this something to do with my specific model, can anyone do a comparison also and let me know?

Thanks

Apple provides a 14 day return policy if you are unhappy with your purchase for any reason.

Yes there have been changes in the display.  Look towards the bottom of this narrative:

Perhaps these changes are not to your liking.

Ciao.

I do know that but want to find if there is a different and inferior screen being used and then decide wether I can live with it or return and hope for a better replacement (if faulty).

I'm planning on popping down to Apple Store to do a companion with a display model also, just to be sure. But would like to hear what others think, if possible.

Thanks. I can see better colour reproduction mentioned but not if the screen tech has been changed. Is Apple

compromising on viewing angle for a thinner/lighter and cheaper display?

It feels like the same screen tech used on phones, but I could be wrong.

I suspect that only an Apple engineer could give to an authoritative answer to your last query.  That type of information is not in my knowledge base.

Ciao.

Do you know how I could obtain an answe from an engineer or do they respond in these forums?

These forums are user to user with no Apple personnel present.  Do not expect a response from any Apple engineer here.

What you might try is post on the iFixit website and see if anyone there has done a close inspection of the new/current displays.  Another possibility is to contact the OWC technical staff and see if they have looked into this area.  I just do not know how likely they may have been.

Ciao.

This is a valid concern. Let me explain why.

I'm picky. But at the same time, that's why I choose Mac. And I love Apple so I really wanted this to work. But as a designer, I watch pixels all day (and move them!) so I'm pretty quick to see when 'something's up'. Having worked on a Macbook Pro from 2014, I've been spoiled with one of the best displays in the business. Now, I bought a Macbook Pro (2017) and was really excited about it. To my disappointment I found the following..

  • The screen gives off a yellow-ish tint. It's definitely a warmer color to the display, and calibration couldn't get rid of it. I don't mind a warmer hue for normal browsing but as a professional designer the colors needs to be accurate rather than eye-pleasing. I have Nightshift switched off.

  • It's not as sharp as the 2014 version. GUI and text are not that sharp as it used to be. It's almost as if I'm between two resolutions where everything's gets a tad blurry - but of course not that bad, but still noticeable. It gets worse the higher resolution you set, at 1440*900 the texts renders slightly better but that resolution is laughable to use on a 15". These blurry interfaces puts extra strain on my eyes which I certainly feel now. I tried all resolutions in System Settings and also ticked on/off “Use LCD font smoothing when available”.

  • The viewing angles are disappointing. When looking at any angle expect straight on, you'll see a blue-ish hue and loss of brightness. This is more noticeable looking horizontal, i.e. tilting your head a bit to the left and look to the right part of the screen. My old Macbook Pro didn't have this problem, and that display seemed to be brighter in general, which is odd.

I took for granted everything would be better buying a new machine, so I'm very sad to see the complications with this new display. I didn't pay $2999 just to be sentimental.
