can I install Rosetta in Sierra

I'm looking to upgrade to a new computer that uses OS X Sierra.

Is it possible to install Rosetta from my OS 10.6 start-up disc so I can still run PowerPC programs on this new computer?

If not, can I run my external hard-drive containing OS 10.6.8 (my internal drive fried) without having to partition the new internal drive? If so, how do I switch between systems?

Thanking you in advance.

1. No - No Rosetta.

2. No - You can't run a version of OS X older than what comes with a new Mac.

What you may be able to do is run your older OS under emulation. Not sure if the Snow Leopard license allows for it, though. It used to be that only the server versions were allowed; this changed at some point.

It has not been possible and still is not possible to run Rosetta under newer operating systems, so the answer is a definite no in that you cannot run Rosetta under Sierra.

The generally held opinion is that the only legal solution is to run a copy of Snow Leopard Server inside a virtualisation environment such as VMware Fusion, Parallels Desktop, or VirtualBox. It is still possible to buy Snow Leopard Server, you need to ring the Apple Store/AppleCare number and explain your requirement and they can then sort out the order for you.

Note: Whilst it is 'Snow Leopard Server' it can of course run all Snow Leopard compatible applications include those via Rosetta and you do not need to use the Server functions.

Thanks.

It looks like I will just have to keep the old one handy.

Thanks.

I don't understand the issue with the licence as I own an official disc.

I will have to investigate the emulation option.
