Apparent System Corruption

I have an interesting ongoing problem with my Mac that I would like to eliminate. I have a Mac Mini (Mid 2010). The problem manifests itself as some type of system corruption with the primary symptom being the total absence of sound – no iTunes or system alerts. Rebooting does not solve the problem even though you get the startup chord, nor does zapping the Pram. The only way that I’ve found to restore the sound is to download and re-install a new system. Everything will then be fine for some time (months), before the problem occurs again.

This problem originated from a mistake made last December, when moving some items on my desk caused the USB cord from the Time Machine external disk to become disconnected while the computer was running. There must have been I/O going on at the time of disconnect which apparently corrupted a file. At the time it happened there was no obvious problem, and the system appeared to run fine. It was shortly after that I noticed that there was no sound coming out of the system.

At one point I did a complete clean install of the new system, then used Time Machine to update my files. The Time Machine backup I used was not the one that was being used when the accidental disconnect occurred, but it was on a different partition of the same physical disk. After about a month the problem re-occurred. So it is not clear what causes the system corruption that eventually kills the sound. At that point I stopped using the disk drive that got corrupted and am using a different disk drive for Time Machine, but the problem still periodically re-occurs.

Any ideas?
