Watched/Unwatched Information Screwed Up

Hi,

When I upgraded my machine to iTunes 11 it seems to have screwed up the Watched/Unwatched data. And it seems to be fairly random.

I'm assuming there is no way - apart from manually going back through everything - to set this right.

Very frustrating, I would have thought Apple QA should have caught an issue like this, or is it just me?

Anyone else having the same problem, and found any workarounds?

Thanks

Alan

same problem, although manually resetting doesn't work, as many of the changes will revert.  something behind the scenes is changing the unwatched/watched settings.

Spent hours with support dealing with this.  Under preference, you can uncheck the "show in icloud" setting to stop itunes from reverting back.  You can then mark the unwatched programs correctly and use it to sync to your phone.  You are basically managing the details locally only.

Beware though:  I still find that the checkmark mysteriously re-applies from time to time when itunes asks you to re-enter your password (like checking for downloads).  I have to check for downloads, then quickly pull up the preferences and uncheck the box before the icloud feature begins to mark most of my unwatched shows as watched.

I don't think Apple cares, but hopefully they will make the local data the default and stop making the cloud dictate what is watched or not.

Hope this helps.

I have also lost all of my watched settings for all my shows, and it will take hours to find which episode that I last watched for all of my shows, and switch all of the unwatched back.

Thanks for the tip on it resetting to watched from icloud.

I guess I'm back to manually managing my syncs.

Note - The new iTunes seems to run faster, but EVERYTHING else is worse (including this serious bug).

Apple needs to hire programmers with training in the usability standards.

If you haven't upgraded yet, WAIT for this bug to be fixed.

Found another thread that said this bug was fixed but as of yesterday it is not.

I am running the latest version of iTunes (11.01) and whenever it puts a new episode in from a season pass it still marks the new episode as watched and all previous episodes as "partially unwatched" in that season.

Also noticed that it still refuses to download new subscriped podcasts until you go to each one individually and refresh it manually. This is something that is not new to version 11 but obviously still not fixed.

Considering the first thing iTunes 11 did was mark every single one of my iTunes purchased movies as watched this little "glitch" should have been obvious if anyone had done even a little bit of testing.

Apple is continuing it's slow but steady trend to becoming just as unreliable as Microsoft.

I am having a similar problem and it unfortunately is not resolved.  I've downloaded an obscene number of TV shows over the years and all but about 10 at any time are Marked as Watched.  Still, every day, when I return to iTunes at any random time of day, I will find a random number of 0-15 or so episodes of a random selection of shows that I've watched at any possible point in my past will appear in my Unwatched view as Partically Watched.  I then proceed to select them and reset them to Watched only to reencounter the Partially Watched version back in iTunes sometime later in the week or month.

It tested removing the Sync Playback Across Device checkbox but that did not affect the behavior.  I do own multiple iOS devices but I never see this type of behavior, nor do I have any of these past shows on any of them, only iTunes.

I run the most current version of all iOS software.

I was able to resolve this in iTunes 12 by making the two preferences settings below.   No idea why that fixed it.

Preferences > Downloads > Always check for available downloads (uncheck)

Preferences > Store > Sync Playback information across devices (uncheck)

Just sent this feedback to Apple Support. If anyone's still interested:

I know that you lot have been ignoring this problem for a number of years on all platforms, but I may have stumbled onto the cause of the problem.....

It appears that the problem occurs when there is a duplicate episode name in another programme! This may be causing the index/indices to become confused?

I'll leave it to your geniuses(?) to solve the problem, but maybe this is a good place to start troubleshooting?

So, we have a major upgrade (?????????) of iTunes, removing features, but Apple still can't fix an VERY OLD bug?

All you need to do to fix this, all you Apple geniuses (genii?), is write the record back with a key of episode + program + series. GOT IT YET?

For all of us poor buggers who still have to reset our watched/unwatched status every few days, here's a very lengthy workaround:

For every program episode that has a duplicate name in another program, append the program name and series to the episode name.

For example, if program AA has an episode in series 1 named "Pilot" and program BB also has an episode in series 1 named "Pilot", change the Program AA episode name to "Pilot AA S01" and the Program BB episode name to "Pilot BB S01". Rinse and repeat for every duplicate episode name. Should only take a few weeks.

Thanks again, Apple.
