3rd generation watch

I bought a 3rd generation apple watch this past weekend. It has it's own cellular service and data plan. It's supposed to be able to make and receive calls and text messages even when I am not near by iPhone. While I am able to make and receive phone calls when I am nowhere near my iPhone I am NOT able to send or receive text messages. Can someone help em resolve this issue. Thanks!
