Slide over vs split view

iPad Air 2, iOS 11: I can see the visual difference between slide over and split view.  But I don't understand the advantage of using one over the other.  Both options allow choosing and using either app on the screen.

Hi. Slide Over is handy for quickies, like updating a Note or checking the weather. You can just swipe it off the screen when done. Split View is for working in two apps in a sustained way. Also, some older devices only support Slide Over, so they had to be kept separate for them.
