MacBook Pro never finishes starting up after up...

I have attempted to upgrade from 10.9.5 to macOS a few times (always cloning the drive beforehand). The installation process seems to progress fine, and after it does a restart, I enter username and password, and then see the new Sierra desktop and there is the gray spinner on the desktop.

It never gets past this point. The spinner just keeps on going.

I have no idea what to try to attempt to solve this. I am somewhat knowledgeable with the more technical side of Macs and OS X, but nit sure on this one.

The computer works just fine with the current system in place.

I tried upgrading to earlier versions, since I have the installers on the hard drive. Those did not work either.

The only solution I can think of is to do a clean install, and then migrate back from the Time Machine backup or an external clone of the boot drive. My concern there is bringing over whatever is causing the issue. Although I suppose I can always revert back to the Time Machine backup of the current system.

Looking for ideas on what to do to deduce the startup culprit, or advice on the best way to manage a clean install and migration. I've never done the latter and a bit concerned about making sure I can go back to my current setup (which works) if need be.
