Popping Sound, MBP 2016

I have heard a strange noice from my MBP, and am not sure if this is expected or not. Model is MacBook Pro 2016 with Touchbar, 15 inch, Radeon Pro 460, 2.9GhZ i7, 2TB SSD.

The sound occurs rarely, there may be several days or more straight that I don't hear it, though when it occurs, it may happen 2-3 times in a half hour period. There is no association I can make with what I'm doing at the time, so I'm unable to recreate it. The sound is a single hollow "popping" noise, similar to if you slowly squeeze a plastic bottle until it crinkles. The sound is not very loud, but clearly audible, and sounds as if it is coming from approximately behind the trackpad. I've had no other notable problems with this computer to date, have made no modifications to any hardware, or used it in any abnormal way.

I'm not terribly bothered by the sound itself, but I'm aware that the battery is located roughly behind the trackpad, and I worry that an expanding battery might sound like this. The case is not flexed or distorted in any way, there is no abnormal heat being generated, and no smoke, smells, or fumes. I think this is unlikely to be the cause, but is serious enough that I would like an alternative explanation before I disregard it. Alternate explanations might be abnormal activation of haptic feedback, or flexing of internal components as adhesives or seals continue to cure since manufacturing (laptop manufacture date 12-19-2016). The OS X battery status is "Good", "No errors", Simplo model bq20z451, battery manufacture date 12-2-2016.

Thanks for any help!

I'm hearing the exact same issue! I've scoured the internet and have found nothing about it. Your post is the first thing I've seen on this topic.

I have identical specs, albeit the 512GB storage on mine.

My single pop noise also sounds like it's coming from under the trackpad. Very weird.

I am hearing this occasional "pop" sound as well.

same here...

loud "pop" sound from under the touchpad ( late 2016 MBP 15")

Hey I also have this issue... I am wondering if it is due to something inside heating up or shifting inside due to everything being packed so tightly. See this for example from a previous generation: https://6ixpassions.com/post/1095520847/fix-the-ticking-clicking-sound-in-your-ma cbook-pro.

I just wonder whether apple will fix this...

same here, Macbook Pro 15 2016.

Seems to be hardware related since it often, maybe even always appears when the machine heats up or cools down.

Never or rarely hear the popping sound when Macbook is idle, except it was heated up before.

If it is hardware related it is definitely unacceptable for a 2,6K laptop, hopefully not even dangerous if it is a thermal expansion

I think the new Macbook Pro has some heating issues since i also have this problem

MacBook Pro (15" with Touch Bar) Keyboard Clicking/Sticking When Machine is Warm

Same thing on my MBP 13 Touchbar 2.9 16 GB Ram 1 TB HD. What I am hearing sounds very similar to what you are describing. I feel like it only occurs maybe once an hour give or take (rare enough to where like you I didn't feel like it was a huge issue but still not something that I just want to completely ignore). I did notice on mine that it doesn't seem to be coming from the same place every time. I have noticed that sometimes it seems to come from the left side of the keyboard and other times the right side. If I had to guess I would say it has to do with the components expanding ever so slightly as the laptop gets warmer but that's just a guess. Kinda annoying either way.

Same problem here. I went to the Apple Store to get support for this annoying problem. Even after the top case and the battery were replaced in my MBP 2016 the popping didn't stop. My notebook was then replaced by a new one and guess what....the popping sound is still there, although it doesn't occur that often.

Experiencing the same problem here too with a maxed out, 2016 macbook pro 15-inch.  Very frustrating...

Same thing here. Took it in for repair and literally nothing has changed. Very frustrated.

My guess would be one of the clips holding on the back metal cover isn't in all the way but not sure that's it. These new MBPs have like 4 metal clips in addition to the screws that hold the back on. Naybe they didn't install it well? Ive heard that sound because I had to check out mine but everything in there is really solid and shouldn't move. If you can't hear it happening right on the metal I'd take it in to the store. You can see them pretty well in this picture from Ifixit, right near his thumbs. https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/vD5cOxfEQiVt54N2.huge

There are 4-6 spring loaded little peices of metal around the fans that act as supports to keep weight off the hardware too that could make a pop sound but probably more faint than the clips.

I am having the same issue as well. Seems to occur when I open the lid after it has been closed for a while as well as when I am using the computer for a graphic intensive task. I have an appointment with Apple tomorrow. Just a thought, but I have been using a case with a magnetic closure, are any others also using a case with magnetic closures?

You know you could be on to something. Aluminum is paramagnetic but iron and nickel are ferromagnetic and can have spontaneous magnetic events. Wonder if this has anything to do with the large pieces of neodymium in the speakers. If you put a screw or something iron below the cosmetic speaker grill you'll see how strong they are..

I found 2 videos with the popping sound on YouTube:

I hear it several times a day.  I can't tell if it is heat/cold related, or capacitance build-up.  It's definitely a problem, though.  It sometimes happens several times over the course of a few minutes and other times there can be hours in between when I hear it.  I feel like it hear it more regularly shortly after I plug it in to charge.
