New Apple watch (S3) no longer unlocking Retina...

Not sure what's going on.  My retina 5K iMac isn't unlocking with my brand new Apple Watch Series 3.

Worked fine with my old (original) Apple watch, but getting an error message "Unlocking your Mac not supported with your Apple Watch - Update your Mac's software to allow your APple Watch to unlock your Mac".  Everything updated on iphone, watch, and Mac as far as I can see.

Tried rebooting Mac, watch, unpairing from iCloud, repairing, etc.  No dice.

Still showing my old Apple Watch on the security tab, even though I've already unlinked it from my account.

It may be the case that watchOS 4 requires macOS High Sierra, which is due for release on 25 September:

• macOS High Sierra - Apple

Not the case - my old series 0 Apple Watch unlocked it just fine and it was updated to WatchOS 4

Exactly the same problem with my MacBook Pro.

Series 2 watch unlocks with no problem - series 3 watch does not - tells me to update my mac software (which is up to date) !?

Nope - High Sierra on my MacbookPro - didn't solve the problem - still can't be unlocked with the AppleWatch S3
