Additional monitor?

     I hope someone here can help me. My question pertains to an issue I ran into involving screen space. I recently started grad school to become a nurse practitioner. With this in mind, I had already purchased a 27 inch iMAC because I liked the thought of multiple screens being open on a large screen; I frequently have several journal articles open at once while using Word in another. Unfortunately, I have run into issues with being able to get work done at home; I have a three year old and a one year old.

     In order to solve the distractions at home, my wife and I agreed that I should buy a MacBook Pro for use at the local library. I am finding the screen size to be too small and I want a second monitor that I could "slave" windows over to.

     Is the above possible? I have seen "thunderbolt" displays discussed but all these monitors are 24 or 27 inches. Being that I will be at the library I was looking for a much smaller screen that would be portable, and much similar to my MacBook Pro 13 inch.

     Any suggestions? What can I do here?
