iMessage on Mac not working

I've got the new 2016/2017 MacBook Pro and I'm trying to sync my messages between my phone and the Mac.

both are logged into the same Apple ID/I cloud so my contacts have been transferred by iCloud but when I try to send a message from my mac to one of my contacts it comes up with "xxxxx is not registered with imessage" when I know fully well they have an iPhone.

however, when i send a message from my phone it syncs with my Mac and lets me send and receive messages from there (it also doesn't recognise the contact and also only shows up as their number, not their name). I have no idea how to make this work, I've tried everything.
