Multitask not functioning like the past IOS

How do I use multitasking with 2 apps at the same time and be able to look at a third app without having to click on the home screen? For example, with the previour IOS, I was able to watch Netflix and swipe from the right and text someone, then scroll up and tap on another app like Safari and searich the internet on the same screen. I never left Netflix. The new IOS 11.0.2 is not able to use that function like the previous update that came before. It can only multitask with one app on the right hand side. Will this ever be fixed?
