help me choose between these 2 iMacs...

Apple iMac 21.5" (4K, Late 2015)

3.1GHz Core i5

Intel Iris Pro 6200

16GB of RAM

1TB Fusion Drive

Apple iMac 27" (5K, Late 2015)

3.2GHz Core i5

AMD Radeon R9 M380

8GB of RAM

1TB 7200rpm HDD

Screen size:

Obviously the 5K is bigger and bigger is better, but the 4K would be just fine.

So screen size isn't really a deciding factor.

Graphics card:

No question the AMD card is much better than the integrated Iris Pro 6200.

The thing is that I'm upgrading from a 2011 17" MacBook Pro (AMD Radeon HD 6770M), meaning that even the weaker Iris Pro 6200 will already be a significant upgrade.

RAM:

The 21.5" already comes with 16GB, which is nice, but, at the same time, it will forever stay at 16GB!

The 27" comes with only 8GB, but can be upgraded... (note that I wouldn't be able to do it in the near future!!!)

This is a big question mark as I've been working with 16GB on my MBP for the past 6 years or so.

I really have no idea of how constrained I will be with 8GB...

HD:

My MBP had a proper SSD so I'm always going backwards...

The Fusion drive is better, even if the flash portion is pretty small.

I know I could upgrade them both in the future, but it won't be soon. Not within at least a year!

I work primarily with Photoshop, Maya (nothing too heavy though), Rhino, Illustrator and other minor less minor apps. I certainly need a bit more power than the average user, but not as much as you may think from using a heavy weight app like Maya.

I can get both iMacs for the same price.

Which one should I go with?

You've answered  your own question. Everything about the 27" iMac is better but......don't settle when you can have more.

Get the 27 and run it off of an external SSD connected via Thunderbolt.

I think you should get the 5K iMac, you can sure upgrade the RAM yourself, I think.

I don't have an external SSD and like I said, I won't be able to upgrade it in the near future.

If I go with the 27", I'll be "stuck" with 8GB of RAM and a 7200rpm HD for about a year.

Otherwise it would be a no-brainer!

I know I can. It's a piece of cake... I just won't be able to do it now!
