What is the best way to store photos?
What is the best way to store photos in iCloud without taking up space on my iMac or iPhones?
If you're going to use iCloud, then you'll want to use the 'Optimize Phone (or Mac) Storage'. On the iPhone, it's found under your Settings > iCloud > Photos. On the Mac, it's found under System Preferences > iCloud > Photos (I think it's in there).
If you're not a fan of iCloud Photos, then I could suggest other third-party options.
iCloud is not a place for "storing" photos. iCloud Photo Library is a sharing service, not an archival service. Any changes you make to any photo on any device or computer that is signed into the same iCloud Photo Library will be changed everywhere. Think if it like a Contacts book for your photos.
If you want to store photos safely, import them to your computer, then back that computer up:
You can also use an archival cloud photo service like Dropbox, Flikr, Google Photos, etc.

Thank you. If i have an external hard drive, can I store them there instead of on my iMac so they don't take up so much space on the imac and slow it down.
Yes, I know that people do store their Photo Library on external drives, however, how to do that so that it runs seamlessly with your system is beyond my purview. I'll put out a bat call to our Photo experts to see if someone can provide you with the alternatives.
Cheers,
GB
If you want to save your photos indeterminately, you need them in three places. Two local storage devices and off-site like dropbox. Compress the photos and upload. I don't trust any photo aggregators like Apple Photo. Who knows what the app does. If you have them in photos, export them out of photos and save to the three locations so you can be sure you have the photos.

And, not to mention, Flickr and Google Photos....two of my favorites....just my two cents.

Beat you both to them!!! hahahaha!

Thanks for your replies, this has helped me too.
May i ask a supplementary question about what i should be looking for in an external hard drive ?
I'm obviously looking to back up my photo's and also utilize for Time Machine.
Should it be powered by it's own mains supply or use power from my iMac ?
How should it be formatted ?
Any particularly unreliable/unsuitable makes ?
Dropbox isn't really an appropriate place to keep your photos if you use the Photos app, you'd need to keep photos as you would in the finder, in which case you'd lose most of the information that goes with the photos.

It is not a good idea to use your Time Machine drive to store a Photos Library as well. for several reasons.
- Time Machine will try to use all storage it can get, and will be fighting with Photos for storage, unless you partition the drive.
- TimeMachine cannot backup a library that is on the same drive.
- You cannot enable the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag on a Time Machine drive, so you cannot connect the drive to different computer and share the library between Macs.
- If the drive fails, both your backups of your photos will be gone, the Time Machine backup and the separate backup.
I would get two drives, one to store the backup copy of your Photos Library, and one drive for Time Machine.
Format your Time Machine Drive MacOS Extended (Journaled).
A Time Machine drive should have a storage capacity of at least two-and-a-half times the size of the data you want to back up. So, if your Mac has an internal drive of 1TB, get yourself a Time Machine drive with 2.5 to 3 TB. If the drive is smaller, Time Machine will not be able to store a long history and frequently have to erase older backups.
I recommend a powered external storage device.
I'd give OWC a call. 1-815-338-8685.

You want something to be at least as large as your internal drive. I suggest bigger.

Sorry. This sort of statement is off base IMO.
You can certainly choose to not trust/use or advocate the Photos app.
To suggest or imply it has a mind of its own or that its features are unpredictable is irresponsible.
Anyone who reads the documentation or help system etc. for the app, knows what it does. Photos does not have a deep feature set by some standards, but what features it does have are known. It is not a risky product by any means.
Just spent ten days sorting through my parents photos. Lost some photos because they were created and saved with old adobe and apple software. Even the free Gimp app wasn't able to recover them. I'll spend some more time on this and see if I can find the old apps.
We talking about backup of the photos not what method is used to display the photos. I put all the photos in the Photo app for my parents to view.
I'm talking about family photos here and I'm not interesting in loosing them. I exported all the photos to common formats gpeg and gif for permanent storage.

Ok, I understand.
The fact your historical photos may be in older and unsupported formats, is not due to Photos being unpredictable or not knowing what it will do.
That is the inference you made and I feel is unfair.
