Ethernet Status: Cable Unplugged, while it actu...
Hello,
Specs of my computer: MacBook Pro, 13-inch, mid 2012, Sierra 10.12.6, processor: 2,9 GHz Intel Core i7, memory 8 GB, Hard Disk 1TB.
I have problem with the ethernet. It suddenly stopped working a few days ago. In System Preferences>Network it says “Status: Cable Unplugged”, while I am now connected to the net through the same cable but from another computer, so it is not an issue with the network. I am not computer savvy so I searched the net and did several things but nothing helped. I will list them by points:
1.— Delete all network interfaces in System Preferences > Network
— Delete file /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist and file /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
— Reboot
— After Reboot go to System Preferences > Network and add all network interfaces
Did not help, even ethernet disappeared from the networks list to be added, so I put back the deleted files.
2. Change settings in Network for "Configure IPv4" from DHCP to Manually - it helped for a second or two after reboot - the Ethernet showed 'connected' but in a second it turned back to cable unplugged.
3. Reset PRAM/NVRAM - helped for a few seconds, after startup was ethernet working but in a moment showed Cable Unplugged again. Later I did it again and this time it didn’t help at all any more.
4. Reset the SMC (PMU) - no help.
5. Rebooted to safe mode - no help.
6. Checked the network hardware in Terminal with “networksetup” and then with “ifconfig” but since I found such suggestions online, I don’t know what the outcome means (ie. if it shows any errors or not):
networksetup -listallhardwareports

7. Did Etrecheck but it only showed issues with Adobe Reader Updater Helper not loading.
8. In a recovery mode I recovered my computer to an earlier copy of the system from Time machine, from about 1 month ago (that was the last backup I had, at that time ethernet was working, however sometime in July for several days I had also connection issues - it only worked for some minutes or sometimes maybe half an hour after starting the computer and then stopped and I had to reboot the computer to have internet working again. This situation somehow dissolved by itself at the time as I didn’t manage to fix it then.) This recovery now unfortunately did not help either.
9. Contacted Apple support but they essentially told me to bring the computer to their service to have it checked.
10. Subsequently I discovered that under Apple sign>About This Mac>Overview>System Report>Hardware>Ethernet Cards it says “This computer does not appear to have any PCI Ethernet cards installed”. I compared it with another mac from which i’m writing now and saw that here it says “Type: Ethernet Controller; Bus: PCI” and after some further details “Location: /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/nvenet.kext ” so I went back to my affected computer and checked if this file exists at that location - and yes, it is there…
11. I performed Apple Hardware Test holding D while booting and this test found nothing wrong.
At this point I don’t know what else I can do to find the problem and fix this issue by myself. I will be grateful for suggestions as fixing at the service is only the last resort for me. If you suggest something, please write it clearly how to do it since I am not any IT specialist and I won't be able to understand some mind shortcuts etc.
Thank you for reading till so far.
