Play count is not updating when syncing

Whenever I manually sync my iPhone to iTunes on my MacBook, the play count no longer updates. I purchased a new album, listened to it on two flights (meaning I heard each song more than three times) and after I synched to iTunes the play count still shows zero. If I listen to anything on my iPod (yes I still have one)) and sync it, the play count in iTunes updates, it is only not updating with the music played on my iPhone, Why?

While your iPhone is plugged into iTunes, click on the "Music" entry under "Library" on the left.

Are the resulting sync instructions set up to sync your playlists?  You would either sync your entire library (as I do below) or select the approprate playlist(s).

You must use iTunes 12.6 to communicate to iOS 10.3.X.

I am set to sync "selected playlists" and when I sync any new songs I have added to the playlist update to the phone just fine (well sometimes it creates a duplicate playlist but that's a different issue) it is just that when I sync the play count from the phone doesn't transfer over to iTunes and update the count. IE I have a new album I have listened to multiple times this past week, but after syncing my phone the playlist in iTunes still shows zero plays.

I also have this issue. Your response doesn't solve the issue.  I have 42gb in my itunes library.  My ipod touch is 16gb and I prefer to manually select certain playlists etc as needed.  I have smart playlists to do what I want and many of them are based on the last time something was played.  Last played/play count isn't updating so it makes them almost useless. Please advise.
