Where should I keep files on my Mac?

Im new to the whole Mac work, recently changing from windows. So I've been keeping all my uni documents and files in the iCloud Drive of the Mac as I thought they would be safer there, however I've noticed that it takes a while for the documents or photos to fully upload. Is there another place I should be saving these instead?
