How to remove purgeable files in macOS Sierra?

Hi everyone. I was wondering how to remove the purgeable files? I just bought a new MacBook Pro 2016 (non-touch bar) and already it has 71Gb of purgeable files. Also where did this come from? It seems like another copy of my restored Photos library since they are similar in size. Thanks for your help

These Apple articles should provide you with the necessary information:

Ciao.

Purgeable files surrender their space whenever an Application or the System needs more file space (that is why they are called purgeable).

There is no benefit in having free space over purgeable file space, the result is the same -- the space is available if needed.

When you thinkg macOS Sierra is smart or automatically make available when storage space is needed.

The truth is NO!

As you can see, I need 73.3GB, Outlook keep complaining that is no space!

Please give a button clear Purge-able File! Just make thing more simple.

Some purgeable files are produced when you ask Time Machine to keep hourly Backups, but do not connect the Backup Drive often enough.

Otherwise that is a BUG in Outlook, and you need to take that issue up with Microsoft. Puregable files are available when any Application requests new file space. Outlook is not using the latest Apple methods for allocating file space.

This makes sense, but it doesn't actually happen. Aside from my Purgeable space, I have 106 free GB, but the application I'm trying to download requires 60. Shouldn't be a problem, but I have 75GB of Purgeable data that I have no idea how to get rid of. SERIOUSLY APPLE, FIX THIS.

Free up storage space on your Mac

macOS Sierra can save space by storing your content in the cloud. And new tools make it easy to find and remove large or unneeded files.

this link to this article was already posted above:

I had the same problem when needing to increase the size of my Bootcamp partition and the pesky "Purgeable" part made that impossible. I've found an easy way of fixing it and written a blog post on it. So you can read how to remove the Purgeable part from the disk here.

Thanks for that idea, but watch isn't included in macOS. You'll have to build it, or suggest an alternative for continuously monitoring the size of that file.

Also, I think it's easier to use ~/file.txt ... something other than /Users/<replace with your username>/file.txt which invites typos.

Just a thought.

Just wanted to not create confusion of use tilde, but I realise that's because I'm Swedish, so it's not easy to find on the keyboard. Good advice, I'll change the article.

Thanks man!

Those changes are welcome, because a reader only has to copy and paste. No typing required.

Helping someone correct typing errors can take days. They omit space characters. They add space characters. They don't press Return and wait forever for something to happen, or they press Return prematurely. They confuse slash with backslash, double quotes with single quotes... the potential for disaster is great.

No benefit to purgeable versus free?  Try to install new software with 40 Mb of free space.

Hourly backups?  I can't change this.  Stay connected to the backup disc?  I can't do that with a laptop.  That is why I have a laptop.

Outlook on a Mac?  Seriously?  On Bootcamp yes, but all Outlook files are kept on the Bootcamp disc.

Is this just a scam to get people to buy iCloud storage?

Use:

mkfile -n 50g dummyfile
