iMessage vs text

Do I need LTE service to send a text or iMessage? I cannot send an SMS or text message unless I have LTE. Is this right?  Also I cannot send email on 4g. Not happy with att!!

First, let's consider text (SMS) messages.  These are sent using your cellular carrier's (in your case, AT&T's) system.  But they are not sent as cellular data; they are sent similar to a voice cellular call.  So if you can make a cellular telephone call, you can send or receive an SMS message.  LTE is not required - older cellular technology suffices.

Now let's consider iMessages.  These are sent/received to/from other Apple devices using either Wi-Fi or cellular data if the cellular carrier authorizes carrying these messages (AT&T does carry them).  So you need cellular data for iMessages if you're not using Wi-Fi.  Again, LTE is not required.

Finally, email would also require cellular data just as iMessage does, and also only if you are not on Wi-Fi.

No, SMS doesn't require LTE. It requires any cellular voice connection. Old flip phones that had not data connection at all could send and receive SMS. You can turn off data on your phone and SMS will still work.

iMessage requires a data connection, either WiFi or cellular.

MMS and Group Messaging will require a cellular data connection.
