what determines whether a video file is a movie...

i have itunes 12.1

i have several tv series on DVD. i use HandBrake to rip the individual episodes to .m4v files which i want to load onto my ipod touch (2nd gen) and iphone 6.  here's the thing.  when i drag and drop the .m4v files into itunes some go into Movies and some go into Home Videos.

i know how to change the files once they are in iTunes (use the Get info link), but i want to know what (i'm assuming) in the metadata causes iTunes to categorize the file when it's imported, this way i can know ahead of time which folder it will get imported into, so i don't have to do it after the fact.
