recover files from USB flash drive

I would like to know how to recover files from a USB flash drive.  The story is that 2 days ago I saved a PowerPoint file (v.2011) from my MacBook Pro (OS 10.9.4) to a flash drive (2 GB Dane Elec) after moving some files off the flash drive; it is a flash drive that I use regularly.  The next day I plugged it into a PC at work and got a message that the drive was unreadable.  Thinking it was some weird PC problem since the PC had been rebooted after power outage just before using my flash drive, I brought the flash drive home, plugged it into my MBP and got a similar message.

I want to know how to recover those and other files on the drive.  I considered using Disk Utility to repair it but DU indicates that the drive is not formatted.  I am reluctant to format it bec that will wipe all my files. 

Any thoughts, any software that might recover the files?

Try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

thanks for the link to data recovery products.  I use the Stella Phoenix program and it recovered the files.  Some of the PPTX files are fixable but the PPT files are listed as corrupt.   Now all I have to do is "uncorupt" some of them.  If you have any suggestions, I welcome them.  Thanks again.

  1. Take a deep breath. Everything’s going to be ok.
  2. Open Finder.
  3. Mouse up to the main menu bar and select Go.
  4. Hold down Option on your keyboard and select Library from the drop-down menu when it appears.
  5. In the finder window, browse to Library > Containers > com.microsoft.Powerpoint > Data > Library > Preferences > AutoRecovery
  6. Select the file you’re looking to recover and rename with a .ppt extension.
  7. Move the file to the desktop, or another handy location.
  8. Reopen, and pick up where you left off.

Maybe you can try uFlysoft Data Recovery for Mac, it can recover LOST DATA on Mac only in three steps:

Step 1. Launch the software to scan the device where your files deleted

Step 2: Preview the scan result files and make mark if it is the one you find

Step 3: Recover files
