Do I lose a lot by not upgrading to Sierra?

I have been using iMac of late 2012 version (2.7 GHz intel core i5; 8 MB DDR3 Ram; 1TB HDD; 21.5" monitor) with Mavericks (OSX 10.9.5).

Am I compromising a lot of performance by not upgrading to Sierra?

I have downloaded Sierra, but a bit hesitant to install it, least I fail to get acquainted with its new features. I have heard that Sierra has come up with lots of new features not very familiar to Mavericks.

I am not a feature-freak and hence would be happy to continue with my present OS, unless there is a lot of performance improvements rather than cosmetic changes.

Make a bootable back up of your current set up - you should have that anyway - and upgrade. If you don't like the changes restore from the back up.
