Mac book pro wont boot up ?

My MacBook Pro has recently been saying the disk was almost full and was a bit slow. Today I went to delete some files and when I tried to log in it froze so I decided to reboot it, however it will no longer boot up. The apple logo and grey progress bar appear but it then shuts itself off about half way through...

Has my MacBook hard drive disk died ? The computer is a 2011 model so it's a fair age now and I've never replaced anything on it.

I was thinking of upgrading soon anyway so it's not the end of the world my main concern now is ? How can I get some files off the disk without it booting up ? Is it difficult to do ?
