icdd PrintUITool Chewing up CPU Cycles
What the heck.
I have been going through this issue ever since I updated to macOS Sierra.
I have read NUMEROUS posts here on the apple support communities regarding this issue but the discussions were always the same.
"Post your blah blah output and blah file." User posts the outputs, person who requested them never responds.
Is there anyone from the Apple engineering team that is even remotely qualified to address this issue? Is it malware? Is it a bug in Sierra?
I even tried removing the executable permission on the icdd binary but no go, even with sudo I have no permission.
````
abe@MacBook-Pro /Library/Caches [13:25:40]
> $ sudo chmod -x /System/Library/Image\ Capture/Support/icdd
Password:
chmod: Unable to change file mode on /System/Library/Image Capture/Support/icdd: Operation not permitted
`````
I wrote extensively on this pos process here on my blog https://atbe.me/2016/10/01/printui-and-icdd-suck/
Someone please help me figure out wth is going on.
Please restart your Mac in "Safe Mode" and observe that process while operating in that mode.
Then, restart normally.
Report your observations.
Will do. It is hard to get icdd or printuitool to purposely act out. I'm not sure if I can reproduce the issue on demand.
I will try my best to trigger the behaviour while in "Safe Mode."
Those processes are not always that active? In other words it comes and goes?
Try disabling iCloud. Sign out of iCloud completely.
Select Open Files and Ports, copy all that information and post it in a reply. It may or may not reveal anything useful.
Is there anyone from the Apple engineering team that is even remotely qualified to address this issue?
Yes but they will never directly contribute to this site. They labor in darkness, deep within a concrete and steel reinforced bunker.
Is it malware?
No.
Is it a bug in Sierra?
Possibly.
I even tried removing the executable permission on the icdd binary but no go, even with sudo I have no permission.
You can't do that due to SIP.
I might have stumbled on a solution for icdd and PrintUITool consuming all of the PCU cycles. I was have this exact same issue.= and was searching for a fix online. I noticed that I had to outstanding software updates in the app store. One for Spark and one for iPhoto, the old version. I didn't actually think it would help but installed the updates anyway. I installed both of these and rebooted. Now I don't see icdd and PrintUITool consuming all of the PCU cycles. I've only been running for an hour so we'll see. I'll report back and provide and update if this is the fix or not.
