imac apps keep freezing when i click things?

About a month ago I bought an imac second hand off a family friend and they bought the imac in 2015 but barely used it. During the last week it's been doing something frustrating. I could click anything and anywhere, and the application that I am using will suddenly freeze and the spinning ball will appear and I'm forced to shut the application down. For example today I was using photoshop and hadn't saved the document I was working on. I went to open up another document in photoshop and when I clicked open, the spinning ball appeared and I lost all my work. At the moment this has only happened when I used Photoshop (CS 5.1), Microsoft Word and Firefox.

Does anyone know how I can fix this or why it's doing this? I have macOS Sierra version 10.12.5.
