Saving files to iTunes media file on an externa...

I have a new folder of music and one of audio books that I want to keep on my external drive and play and organize with iTunes. The two folders are currently on my external but I want to be sure that my iTunes Media folder stays on the external drive, not my 2010 laptop that cannot handle the size of these files.  Please describe the steps that I need to do this.   Thank you !
