HDMI to TV = static, why?

When attaching my MacBook Pro to my Vizio TV all is well, but only when I'm using the computer as usual, including watching youtube videos.  The attached TV becomes a duplicate desktop.  But when I use an Internet service like Kanopy the existence of the video on a tab in Google Chrome (whether the tab is in front and visible or not), forces the Mac to behave differently.  Another screen opens that shows up in Prefs:Displays, just like it would if I plugged in another monitor (which I did, in effect). I understand that the scan rate of video is different than that on a computer monitor.

I know about dragging the white bar in Displays to make one of the monitors dominant, and I tried 'Mirroring Displays', and closing the lid on my laptop after the connection is made, but nothing I do stops the static that appears on the TV, but not on the MacBook Pro monitor.

Thanks for any ideas,

Greg

Hi,

Do you have a different HDMI cable to try? It's possible it's the cable.

Good point.  'Occam's Razor' is to always try to apply the simplest explanation first.

I thought I had another HDMI cable but I can't find it.  I just moved.  Since this problem is not 'mission critical, I think I'm gonna let it be.

Thanks,

Greg
