my macbook pro 2016 is not charging

i bought my macbook pro 2016 model 2 days ago, and ever since i got it i've been facing issues.

1. there is a problem with the wifi where it keeps disconnecting, and when connected the internet runs very slow

2. secondly and the biggest problem im facing right now is that its not charging even though its plugged straight into the wall. it gives the charge sign and all but the battery is still getting depleted. It wasnt doing that in the begining but now its somehow permanent. i've tried shutting down and rebooting and still the same issue.

Can someone please help me explain this problem, and advise me wether i should return the macbook or wait for an update that will fix this. there seem to be a lot of problems with the usb-c port

Same issue happened to me today Dec 5.  New MBP 2016 w/touch bar 18 days old.  Noticed battery level trickling down but I was plugged in "Battery is Not Charging".  Immediately took it to the Apple store and was told reports of non-charging units have been reported.  Apple is replacing the laptop with a new one but I first needed to take mine home for a quick Time Machine backup.  I was told that as long as the laptop is plugged in then it would run.  NOT TRUE however so I hope my TMB finished.  Anyway, I'll be at the Apple store first thing to pick up my replacement.  Apple is providing the support I expect but I do hope this issue is not a reflection of things to come.

I'd first try resetting the SMC, but if that doesn't work, I'd do as Marshall did and return it for refund or exchange (not repair, who wants a repaired new MBP).

I have this issue too.

First i tried to reset the smc, didn't help.

I have verified that the power adapter provides power, I then tried if my powerbank which could previously charge the MBP while off or in Standby, no luck either.

Now my MBP has no power and won't turn on even when plugged in.

First thing tomorrow i will call apple but since i am about 250 km away from the next Apple Store in Germany i will have to wait

Have a trip planed in about 10 days where i need my laptop!

Had the same problem with my 15" MBP 10 days ago. Got my MBP as soon as they come out. All working fine until one day the machine turned off suddenly(I wasn't noticing it wasn't charging before it died).

It is hard to believe that new machine and new battery will have hardware issue so soon. My guess is that it maybe have something to do with the new USB Type-C controller, or whatever power management logic. For some reason it refuses to suck power from the ports. It maybe a software bug.

I took my machine to Apple Store and after some tests they replaced a new one for me.

I'm curious about something as far as accessories. When I experienced my power issue back in December I was using an Apple brand USB-C VGA Multiport adapter for power passthrough to the MB.  Now I just connect the power directly to its own USB-C port on the MB because I am concerned about "anything" that could cause the power problems as described in this thread.  Anyone else using power passthrough?

As others already have suggested, make a quick backup while you can and return it. You'll be glad you did.

My MBP Touch Bar is now dead (probably faulty logic board) and authorised Apple service partners where I live (Sweden) haven't been provided with the necessary tool to copy data from these machines.

In my case, I didn't use anything that has power passthrough. I always use the cable and wall adapter come with my mac. I only

connected 1 or 2 external drivers(type-c to miniB cable), a type-c to 4 type-a adapter and sometimes the type-c to lightning cable for my iPhone and iPad. Not using the VGA adapter wouldn't eliminate the possibility for it to happen again.

USB Type-C is the one universal port for everything and it will make trouble shooting extremely hard. A lot more information and tests are required to figure out the real cause behind this.

Also like Jan said, to anyone who may find this thread in the future, get your data always backed up is a good habit. I suggest all mac users take advantage of the convenience of Time Machine to back up and easily recover to a new machine. I have my TM hard drive connected at least once a day. Because of this habit, when my MBP died, I didn't lose any data. This is extremely important to recent MacBooks with non-removable storage. For example if the logic board died in the 2016 MBP, you will need a special tool to be able to get any data from the machine. The risk is really high, so treat your data better.

I have a similar problem. Brand new MBP. I've had it for about two weeks. It worked fine until today. Now suddenly, when I plug it in to charge (using the Apple charger and cable that came with it) it chimes, seems to charge for about 10 seconds, then stops for about three seconds, then chimes again, charges for 10 seconds, stops again for three, chimes, and so on, over and over and over. It's unusable this way, since the sound is incredibly annoying, and the screen keeps dimming and brightening each time it starts and stops charging. I've tried all the usual steps, including a different cable, all the USB-C ports, different outlet, and resetting the SMC. Nothing. And of course, it happens two days before I need it for a trip. Very, very, very unimpressed.

Hi O.Schaefer,  one thing that I did check (when I only had a single power brick) in hopes to rule out a bad power brick was the wattage being reported.  Click on the apple in upper left and goto "About this Mac".  From there look at the "System Report" . In the left column you should see "Power".  Near the bottom it will show "AC Charger Information".  When the charger is plugged in check that you are getting 86+= watts.  Maybe this could help rule out a bad power brick.  Other than that I would get a Time Machine backup and take the unit back to Apple for a replacement.  I am now constantly worried about my new (replacement) laptop doing this same thing and I told Apple that if it does then I'm migrating away from MacBook.  Good Luck!

Thanks. It's a 13-inch model, so I have the 61w charger. But it seems to be getting 60 watts, so I assume that's close enough. I've been in touch with Apple and have an appointment to get it looked at. (Hoping that I have enough battery left to do my backup now!) And yeah, I feel you. This is not the kind of thing I need, especially when I need it on the road all the time.

I have this problem too. I have got my macbook pro 15'' for almost a month. Then the battery was unable to charge any more. I tried to reset DMC but the problem remained. I took it to the apple store for testing and the staff said there might be something wrong with the motherboard. Later I was told that I could get a replacement because this is a "rare" problem and the root cause is hard to find. Anyway, I hope that this really is a rare problem and the replacement will be good.

Quick update. While I did check the brick/adapter and it said I was getting 60 watts, it still turned out be a fault with the adapter. So that was really fortunate. They handed me a new one and sent me on my way. It's been working great ever since. So at least in my case, the problem was solved.

I'm having a similar problem that I started noticing a couple of days ago (but may have been happening longer given my battery cycle count). While plugged into originally-supplied USB-C power brick (86W), 15" 2016 macbook pro stops charging and starts running battery down to a range between 50% and 90%, and then spontaneously resumes charging to 100%.  Will then run on USB-C power reporting 100% battery, but after a period of time, repeats the drain down and recharge. Wondering if this could be an intended battery conditioning procedure, but wouldn't that dramatically increase the cycle count? Got mine in the first production batch and have used it almost exclusively connected to power, but my battery cycle count = 38.

Headed to Apple Store after backup.
