MacBook Pro 2011 fails to boot

Symptoms:  on pushing the power stud, the chime is heard BUT at about 30% of the progress bar under the Apple logo, the screen goes straight white and nothing else happens.  hard shutdown and attempted restart gives same result although one time in ten it would actually boot just fine.  Unfortunately this escalated to one in a hundred and now of course we are at "one in N, where N is an integer not yet known".

Backstory: this model had defective video cards, we received two motherboard replacements due to screen antics. When the model fell off Apple's supported list, I had to buy a new motherboard. This worked for about four months, then incipient drive failure mandated HDD replacement.  Now on SSHDD with current OS and experiencing the above boot failures.  Latest Genius theorizes the SSHDD cable is defective. This might be true.  How do I diagnose and fix that? And is it likel given that the unit can work just fine once in a while and that we see progress toward viable boot-up at every attempt?  Halp!
