Accessing an external hard drive that quit unex...

Hey -- I need some help! I was working on an external Toshiba hard drive on my MacBook when it quit unexpectedly, and now I can't get it to show up when I plug it into the USB port. I can see it in Disk Utility, but can't seem to access it and don't know where to go from there. My computer is old and currently running El Capitan 10.11.6. Anyone know the best way to go about trying to access my data without losing it?
