iMac uploading files when Sleeping?
Can I keep my iMac uploading files when it automatically goes to Sleep? I want to upload my entire Aperture 3 Library to Flickr, but when my iMac goes into 'sleep mode', it stops uploading until I wake it up. I have set the Energy Saver in System Preferences to Never 'Turn display off after:', but to no avail. Can anyone help me? Thanks Chris
Hi Christopher Nicol,
I understand that you would like to make sure that your computer still completes processes while you are not at the computer. You should make sure that the “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” check box is not activated. This option is located in your Energy Saver settings, as seen in this article:
About Energy Saver sleep and idle modes in Mac OS X - Apple Support
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201714
I would recommend that you set your display sleep to your preference, then set your computer sleep slider to “Never,” or however long you think will be necessary to complete the upload.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
if you have an older mac (mine is 2010) be careful moving the sliders to 'never'. I did that and it put my iMac into the 'black screen of death' and took a while for me to fix it.
it would be handy if the mac 'knew' it was uploading so would not go into sleep mode. If Mac's are 'smart' that's what we should expect.
Kind hard to do that because your mac always communicates with different servers/webservices.
In other words, they rely on user input to time the sleep, you can't rely on network since there is always activity, depending on what the user has installed.
I've turned my slider to not let the hard drive sleep countless times over 20+ years for large downloads, rendering video, etc without any problem - your "black screen of death" must have been an unfortunate coincidence. Out of curiosity: what exactly is a "black screen of death"?
from my knowledge, it's when your screen stays black no matter what, and a hard reset (keeping the power button pressed) does not solve it.
More info you can find here: Black screen of death crash.
Ok, it's a kernel panic.
