App Store Icon

I keep seeing the number 1 on the app icon on my iPad.  But when I check, I don't see an app that needs to be updated.  I've turn my iPad on and off, and I've toggle the app store switch on and off, but the number 1 is still there.  What does this mean and how do I get rid of it?

I had that problem once in the past. It went away on its own when another app needed to be updated -- the number went up to 2 and then when the 1 new update completed, the number went away.
