Folder disappeared from HD after renaming

I had a folder with a PowerPoint file (.PPT), plus a collection of videos employed in that PPT saved. It was not on my desktop, so in my hierarchy of files. As the company it was for had changed their corporate name, I went to the folder and changed its name to new company name and hit CR. Everything in the new folder (and old folder) has disappeared from my HD, as near as I can tell. Using Spotlight they show up, but neither has anything inside of the folders. I know the files are still on the HD, but how might I find them, as I'm out of rookie tricks at this point?

This was asked on behalf of my business partner who is traveling. Sadly, as much as I've encouraged him to hook up a TimeMachine, I don't think he has yet done that. I was not aware of this approach to MacBooks, so thanks for this new info.
