I thought I was required to enter my iCloud password to complete the setup process after my phone upgraded to iOS 11.0.2 overnight-without my consent (yes I know that can happen (but my sister in law said there was an option to skip that step. Is this true?

My gf cannot ever retrieve or reset her password - long sad story. Anyway it would be wonderful to hear that her phone will survive this upgrade

Software updates for iOS DO NOT install without permission. If they installed overnight, it's because you got a prompt about earlier in the day to allow it with your device PASSCODE not your Apple ID password. If she forgot that, she can start here.

Well I KNOW that’s how it happens, but I DID NOT approve any prompts to allow this upgrade. But that is not the point or the question. 

I mentioned that the is NO WAY EVER that she can recover her password, and cannot do a restore and lose many many many years of important data (mainly messages). I put in over 300 hours trying to resolve her situation. My case # with Apple support is a very thick book, and the situation could NOT be resolved.

Now the question I asked is-is it an absolute requirement to enter the iCloud password to complete the upgrade to iOS 11.0.2???
