Is it possible to do an iPad backup and NOT backup photos?
I only use my iPad Pro to backup photos when traveling.
I want the photos on my iPad, but here's no need to backup to my Mac. I transfer photos from SD cards to my RAID when returning from a trip.
I keep my iTunes Library on an external RAID, but my MacBook Pro doesn't have enough space for iTunes to do a complete backup. Unless I delete all the photos from my iPad, I can't do a complete backup.
Is there a way to control this? In iTunes or elsewhere?
You could use other cloud services like Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive etc. The apps are in the AppStore.
If you are using iTunes, then the only photos that are part of a backup are those saved in the camera roll. When using iTunes for backup, none of the data you store on the Mac and sync via iTunes is included in the backup.
Transfer the photos to your Mac and delete them from the camera roll once imported, then organize them as you wish in Photos (or whatever program you use) and sync those organized albums back. After that, your backup should not contain any photos at all until you take more in camera roll.
I keep all my photos in OS X Photos and my backups (128Gb iPhone 7, and 128Gb iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro) are not large at all - all 3 backup fine in the default 5GB iCloud storage. But if the camera roll album on the iOS device is large, then the backup will be correspondingly large as well.

All I want to do is omit the camera roll from the backup. The same way you can tell iTunes not to
Is that possible to control?
My photos are all 24MB per shot RAW files. I really don't want to waste time shifting back and forth. Just looking for more control over the backup process.
The funny thing is, iTunes is set NOT to backup Photos. Guess I need to pullout the pitchfork and clear space on my MacBook Pro.
No, you cannot exclude camera roll from the backup. But you can empty camera roll before backing up by importing those photos onto your RAID storage. If you still want them on the device just have the import erase them once imported, then sync them back (Now that they are no longer in camera roll, they won’t be part of your backup).
