Missing iPhone backup in iTunes

I need to set up my new iPhone (a replacement for my lost phone) and I need to use my iTunes backup to recover my contact, apps, and data. When I launched iTunes it said there's a later version and do I want to update. Sure, I said. When it finished there's a new message to the effect of  "we've changed iTunes to concentrate more on music and streamin" and my backups are *gone*. Did I just get sucker punched by Apple? Is there any path to recovery?
