Macbook Pro shutting down randomly

Mid-2014 Macbook Pro 15" Retina

OSX 10.12.6

This is a really odd issue that I've never seen during my years in tech support...

This MB will power itself off at random times, usually within minutes of starting up. It doesn't crash or cause a kernel panic, it just shuts down the OS and turns itself off. When you turn it back on it does not indicate there was a problem.

It does not do it while it has network connectivity. If the network cable is plugged in (thunderbolt adapter) or the wireless is connected, it does not shut down. Once I unplug the network or disable wireless, it then shuts down within a minute or so. If I start it up without network connectivity at all, it shuts down within a couple minutes.

You have to log in for it to happen. It does not happen while sitting at the login screen.

If you log in and don't do anything, it does not happen. But when you start using it (open launchpad, open an app, make an app full screen), it will eventually shut down. But when it happens is not consistent.

It doesn't matter whether the power is connected or not.

The MB is completely stationary on a stable desk.

It's not overheating. I stress tested by maxing out the CPU and memory while monitoring the temp and fan speeds with iStat. It went two hours full-bore and no overheating or shutdowns (with the network cable connected).

I took it to the Apple store and they couldn't figure it out. They eventually told me it was a software issue because they saw some random kernel panics caused by an app (lazy troubleshooting). So I wiped the entire drive and reinstalled the OS (10.12.6). It's still doing it with a fresh OS and no other software installed.

Steps I've taken:

Zapped PRAM

Reset SMC

Calibrated battery (full charge, drain battery, full charge again)

Ran the long Apple hardware diagnostics (pass)

Had Apple store run hardware diagnostics (pass)

Erased entire SSD, re-partitioned and reinstalled the OS (no other software)

Tested with and without power plugged in (no difference)

It's not generating any crash reports that I can find in the console.

Any thoughts?

If you have a discrete graphics card in you MacBook, I would look at that first. Faulty gpu's are notorious for causing this problem.

No discrete graphics, just the built in Iris Pro, 1536 MB.
