Wrong iCloud Apple ID, not able to verify

My friend has asked me to figure out why he can’t verify his Apple ID when he tried to set up iCloud. When I checked it for him, it was easy to see the probem: he has a proper Apple ID but when he was trying to set up his iCloud account and it asked him for an Apple ID, he thought he needed to create something different, so he added a numeral to his proper Apple ID (email address) and, of course, it is not a legitimate email address and, therefore, it cannot be verified. However, there appears to be no way to change it back to his proper Apple ID (which would verify). How can he get rid of the improper iCloud Apple ID? It seems to a circular path with no end.

Thanks for any suggestions. (He’s a retired attorney with zero technical skills and always had an IT guy to help him when he was working...he no longer uses a PC, only his iPhone and iPad)
