Only getting mono audio input option

I'm using a Sabrent Aluminum USB External Stereo Sound Adapter with my mid-2012 Macbook Pro. However, when I try to record something from a cassette deck with Audacity (or Garageband or whatever), I only get a mono input. This isn't the wrong cable or anything like that. Audacity only offers the option of 1 (mono) input. The in- and output menus both say USB Audio Device. When I go to Mac sound preferences, USB Audio Device is selected for both in- and output, but I notice that there is only one input level control where you would expect two for stereo.

I didn't have this problem with my old Macbook that had separate input and output jacks. Any suggestions?

Hi there, I too have this probrem, I was wondering if you had found a solution. I same as you , tried the adapter in an old Macbook pro and it worked fine thus eliminatinfg any fault with the device it's self. I would be very grateful for any help you could share. Thank you J

These sound cards are stereo output, but the input jack is MONO only.
