Exchange subfolders don't show read messages

Hello all!

I've encountered a problem which I have to believe has been seen before, but so far, I haven't been able to find a clear answer to.  I use a MacBook Pro at work, and I've recently started using the built-in mail client to connect to Exchange rather than Outlook.  Recently, I realized that the subfolders in my inbox were only pulling unread messages - those already read seemed to not exist, even though the messages were in the folder on the Exchange server.

For example, I have a subfolder named "Documentation" - any email that has useful reference material in it, I throw into that folder.   At the time I switched from Outlook to Mail, all messages in that folder were already read, and none of the messages showed up in Mail.   When I open the folder in Mail, it reports that there are 0 messages in that folder.  No view filters (such as "Unread Messages") are applied.

The good news is, I did find a workaround - using Outlook or Webmail, I can mark the messages as "Unread" and then mail will find and display them.  Also, once I mark the messages "Read" in Mail they do remain available in Mail.

I've tried rebuilding the mailbox already, and that didn't help.  I monkeyed around with Mail and discovered my work-around, so that's good, but does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it rather than work around it?

Thank you much,

Jason
