2012 iMac upgrading software and memory

I currently operate an iMac (Late 2012), running OS X 10.8.5, 8G Memory.

I want to upgrade to macOS High Sierra however I am unsure if this is possible?

One of the General Requirements for upgrading is 2GB of memory. When I check my memory it says 'All memory slots are currently in use', how can I free up memory? Although I know it's seperate, I only have occupied about 20% of storage on my iMac.

Anyone have any advice? Do I need to upgrade memory through Apple? I need to upgrade because things such as Chrome are no longer compatible and I fear other programs will no longer receive updates.

Thank you
