Is there a problem with ripping to mp3 with iTu...

I noticed today that I have recordings of Benjamin Britten's 'Prince of Pagodas' and 'War Requiem' that were ripped a long time ago at fairly low bit rates.  I decided to rerip the albums at 256K, VBR.  I have ripped a LOT of stuff over the years to feed my iPod Classic.  Until today I have had no problems.  I was astonished that the rips were really fast, blink of an eye fast.  Turns out the reason for that is that I was getting tiny 70 K files.  They have type MP3 and Windows thinks they were ripped at 160K, despite what I told iTunes to do.  And the length of all the files shows in Windows as 00:00.  I did EXACTLY what I always do when I rip in iTunes.  I have a custom mp3 definition and this has always worked in the past.  But not today.

I get automatic dates from Apple so I am confident that my iTunes is up to date.  I'm running version  12.7.0.166.  But the latest update put up a puzzling message about new features in iTunes.  Or rather that features had been removed.  The new iTunes is supposed to be all about music.  So some stuff I never use has been removed.  Or I thought that is what the warning meant.  Maybe I misread the warning.  But ripping CDs to mp3 is pretty central to iTunes mission.  Could the creation of weird useless little files pretending to be mp3s be in iTune's future?

Anyway, does anybody know what is going on here?
