Sierra Mac Mail Producing Mail Attachment.as

I am currently working out of Sierra 10.12.4 and running Mac Mail (POP Account). With all .eps and .ai files that I receive, they are showing up as mail attachment.as icons. I am not seeing the file, nor can I right-click and save or preview. This is happening on every single .eps and .ai files. I can go to another computer with El Capitain and access the same email and it shows up normally so I know it doesn't have anything to do with the email server. I have tried rebuilding the mailboxes, made sure my "load remote content..." is checked in Mail Preferences, tried IMAP account vs. the POP account and nothing changes it. Recently in setting up another machine, the same thing is occurring also. I need to use Mac Mail as my mail program but I have got to get this problem fixed. Does anyone else have this exact same problem and have any ideas on how to fix this?

I've read through all the forums and threads on this site and have found similar issues of others but nothing that is exactly like this situation.

Here is a screenshot of the icon that shows up within the message. (The original file is actually an .eps file. I can see this when I access the email from an older OS mail)

As per this article : macOS Sierra: Compress or uncompress files and folders

Compressed files take up less disk space than uncompressed files, so compressing is useful for making backup copies of your data or for sending information over the Internet.

  • Compress a file or folder: Control-click it or tap it using two fingers, then choose Compress from the shortcut menu.If you compress a single item, the compressed file has the name of the original item with the .zip extension. If you compress multiple items at once, the compressed file is called Archive.zip.
  • Uncompress (expand) an item: Double-click the .zip file.

The only work-around I have found to do is this:

go to iCloud.com and access your email from the web browser. I am able to download my .ai files this way. go figure

The same thing is happening to me but only within the last few days and not sure why as I've been on Sierra for a while.  I double click on the seemingly compressed file and nothing happens.  Did anyone figure out why this is happening?
