Gray screen

hello folks,

I have a Late 2011 15’’ Macbook Pro which won't start - stuck at the gray screen . Tried the following things so far:

• Safe Mode (Shift key)
• RAM reset (Cmd+Opt+P+R)
• SMC reset
• Boot from alternative time machine external HD backup (Option key during startup): still Gray screen
• sIngle user mode (Cmd+S) and ran fsck -fy on boot disk: no errors
• Apple hardware Test : regular and extended came back with no errors.

In order to further isolate the problem, I took out the SSD and replaced it with another old SSD - still stuck at gray screen. Both SSDs are working and accessible via a SATA adapter cable on another mac. Since hard drives are ok, it makes me believe nothing is wrong with the OS (software) and it is ultimately a logic board issue. Looking for any further clues / suggestions before i give up and shell out $$$ for a new Macbook Pro [from what i have heard, logic board replacements is upwards of $500, so it ain't worth it give the MBP is 5+ years old].

Have you tried to log in as a guest user?  If guest user access is allowed then something could be wrong with the users specific account.
