Short Lifespan on iOS Devices?

There are several iOS devices around here, but things have become a bit frustrating since the 3rd gen iPad began it's fall into obsolescence after about 4 years. Isn't that kind of short for a rather pricey device?

I'm not able to update past iOS 9x and the apps I rely on the most are dropping like flies. More and more need iOS 10 minimum. And it sure has become unusably slow over the past year as well.

Is it safe to presume that there's no way of getting a newer OS installed?

Uh, IPad 3 (3rd generation) came out in April 2012.

The IPad 3 is nearly 6 years old, now!

I have both an IPad 2 and 3 models and I am still getting plenty of app updates for both.

The apps I use on my current IPad Pro have many of the same apps are  STILL being updated for my IPad 2 still running iOS 9.3.5.

I am still getting nearly 90% of my apps still being updated and are still running on my older IPad 2

You must use/play a lot of games on your IPad 3?

Many games are no longer being updated for older iPads and iOS 9.3.5.

Do the older versions of your apps/game apps still work? They should.

Uh, nope. Rarely if ever play games. Outlook is a great email client, but has become limited (and slow like many other apps) unless you're on iOS 10. AudioBus 3 is a godsend on my iPad Air, but it won't run on anything older than iOS 10, etc. etc. Happening with greater frequency now. In any event I'm stuck with the slow stuff at home on the 3rd gen.

BTW, iOS 10 official release date seems to be Jun-13-2016. That's 4 years after I puchased the 3rd gen new.

I'll look forward to trying your performance tips. Thank you. So far a complete reset and lengthy reinstall of a lot of apps was all that's helped. And only minimally at that.

4 or 5 years is the most you'll see for iOS upgrades/updates for iDevices.
